What is Twitter?

I can't count the number of times I've been asked this questions recently. It comes up in daily conversation and I have a hard time explaining in succinct terms. The best I've heard so far is "text blogging." But that really doesn't explain much, now does it?

Watch this and you'll get it ...

buzz word

Freeganism: an anti-consumerism lifestyle whereby people employ alternative living strategies based on limited participation in the conventional economy and minimal consumption of resources.

This word has been a buzz word in my world this week. I've overheard it several times and been in a couple of discussions about it this week. Before Monday I'd never heard of it. Apparently these people (freegans) dumpster dive in grocery or restaurant dumpsters in order to salvage edible food for consumption. Sounds gross, but intriguing. I think I might actually try it if given the opportunity. I definitely like the idea of living more simply, although I think I might care too much about what others think of me.

I favor the idea of buying less and giving away more. I would like to see that pattern grow in my own life. I really do have too much stuff, and it's easy to get into the mentality of more, more, more. But I don't need more. I've got enough clothes - plenty of clothes. I've got more stuff than I know where to put. Most of the time I dream of moving into my own place just so I can store more stuff.

As I learn more about freeganism, I want to buy less and get rid of more stuff. Give it to Goodwill or other places that give people jobs and build the community. Definitely need to box up some stuff this weekend.

Read more about freeganism here.

Heath Ledger Found Dead in NYC
The Associated Press

NEW YORK -- Heather Ledger was found dead Tuesday at a downtown Manhattan residence, and police said drugs may have been a factor. He was 28. NYPD spokesman Paul Browne said Ledger had an appointment for a massage at the Manhattan apartment believed to be his home. The housekeeper who went to let him know the masseuse had arrived found him dead at 3:26 p.m. (Continue reading)

What a voice!

I've never been much of a YouTube user. I've just never gotten into the addiction, but it's now on my iPhone and I was just browsing through it today and came across this amazing footage from about three months ago. Take a look:

Wow! I cried ... seriously. I love it when God-given talents are realized and people get to use their gifts. That's one of the coolest things to watch in life. Enjoy!

God always does what is wise. And you and I know that God could have held up that bridge with one hand.” Talitha said, “With his pinky.” “Yes,” I said, “with his pinky. Which means that God had a purpose for not holding up that bridge, knowing all that would happen, and he is infinitely wise in all that he wills.”

Talitha said, “Maybe he let it fall because he wanted all the people of Minneapolis to fear him.” “Yes, Talitha,” I said, “I am sure that is one of the reasons God let the bridge fall.”

I think I've known this for a long time, but am experiencing it or really realizing it personally. God doesn't allow people to die if it's not time for them to die. They could fall off a bridge or their plane could crash and they wouldn't die if God didn't allow them to. This is good news ... He's in control.

(No TV or radio tonight. It's been good to think ... and instead of listening to the radio on the way home, I prayed. That was good.)

Worlds collide ...

... when someone from my city around the world is gunned down in my home country. The videos of his family's reaction has been all over the local news here. :( I didn't know him, but it breaks my heart because I know how much people here sacrifice to be able to send one family member overseas to have a better life. It just hits home doubly hard.

Partahi Lombantoruan, 34, of Indonesia, was a civil engineering doctoral student. He had been studying at at Virginia Tech for three years, said his father, Tohom Lumbantoruan, a 66-year-old retired army officer.

Lumbantoruan’s family in Indonesia said they sold off property and cars to pay his tuition and that his goal was to become a teacher in the United States.

“We tried everything to completely finance his studies in the United States,” said his father. “We only wanted him to succeed in his studies, but ... he met a tragic fate.”

His stepmother, Sugiyarti, said he had called almost daily to talk to the family. In their last conversation he had asked for the latest news on Indonesian politics.

“Why can people bring guns to campus?” she asked, weeping. “How is it possible that so many innocent people could be killed? How could it happen?”

An aunt, 53-year-old Christina Panjaitan, said her nephew was hardworking, intelligent and never complained. “He told me he wanted to teach in America,” she said.

Family members were planning a public burial in the Indonesian capital, Jakarta.
